Absolute measurement of mechanical position. The displacement to be measured is conveyed by gear, wheel, chain, lever, universal joint-shaft, etc. to the input shaft of the transmitter.

USBR - Folsom Dam

This project with the United States Bureau of Reclamation at Folsom Dam required the instrumentation of 8 radial gates. During gate operation, the expansion of the compressed seal limited, or prohibited, flow until the gate was raised 1/2" to 1". The linearization feature of the RIPOS allowed the customer to account for ’squeeze’ on the gate seal. Gate movement data for flow calculations (by the customer’s PLC) was measured only after the ’squeeze’ had been released.
